Here at the NW7hub and Mill Hill Partnership Library we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with an incredible space themed annual Summer Reading Challenge.
We are launching our first Space Chase activity on the 20th of July with an immersive experience for all the family at our Mobile Planetarium so step inside and explore the wonders of the solar system and meet Buzz Lightyear. Tickets on sale now and we advise booking to avoid disappointment.

DATES FOR THE DIARY

• An immersive Mobile Planetarium comes to us on Saturday 20th July celebrating 50 years since the Moon Landing.  Advance booking advised.
• Coffee, Cake and Crafting on Saturday 20th July promises to be a treat so come along and have a go at making your own lino cut, mosaic coaster or hama design.
• If you want a mid week laugh come down for our WOW/ GNS  screening of ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ on Wednesday 24th July.  If Bingo is more your thing come down on Wednesday 31st July and try your chances at a full house.
• Pre-Loved Nearly New Baby Sale on Sunday 28th July will have a wide range of fabulous 2nd hand baby clothes and toys on offer for 0 -5 years so come and grab a bargain and update the kiddies wardrobe. Tables are still available for sellers so if you want to boost your summer cash, get in touch.

HEADLINES

• Big Time Summer Fair was a huge success. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying themselves and winning prizes on all the stalls. 
• Mill Hill Litter Pickers Well done to everyone who took part on Saturday 6th July.  You are an inspiration to us all.  Thank for keeping our local area clean. 
• As part of Barnet Year of Learning Sonata Music lead a fabulous free musical instrument taster session on 29th June with lots of people trying out instruments for the first time.

Big Time & NW7hub Summer Fair 

On the 23rd June, under a bright blue sky, the NW7hub and Big Time Academy hosted an outdoor showbiz Summer Fair. Students between 3 and 8 years old performed a mini show in the library for a packed room full of friends and family delighting us all with their poetry and dance routines. Outside, along with a hot dog and popcorn stand, there were beautifully crafted fairground stalls like ‘Hook a duck’ and ‘Grab a carrot’ with special guest appearances from Minnie Mouse, Elsa from Frozen and Buzz Lightyear! 

There was even the chance to practice an acceptance speech and get a selfie with a real Oscar especially donated for the event. Here’s NW7hub & Mill Hill Partnership Library Manager, Jennifer thanking her fans!

Huge thanks go to local businesses, Bob’s Cafe, Pizza Express, Bluebells and Mill Hill Wines  who supported our Raffle by donating some very special prizes. Thanks also go to Zoe Samuelson for her commitment and tireless work throughout.

• Health & Wellbeing Festival 16th & 17th August 12.30pm – 4pm. Join us for a weekend of workshops, health checks and healthy and natural products. 
• Big Time Academy Summer Camp – Join us for a fun filled week full of acting, singing, dancing, building confidence and making new friends.  On the last day the children perform a small show to family and friends. Truly, an experience your child will never forget! Camps for Aladdin start on 19th July – 2nd August (ages 3-8), Lion King 6th – 9th August (ages 3-8 ), Alice in Wonderland 12- 16th August (ages 3-8).

Welcome to the NW7Hub & Mill Hill Partnership Library May Newsletter. It has been a busy month for us with more collaboration, lots of news to share, new classes and birthdays coming up!
 

HEADLINES

• Sir Sydney Samuelson CBE, the first British Film Commissioner and one of Britain’s finest cinematographers joined us for an afternoon talk on his 80 years in the British film industry. We are honoured that he was able to join us and share his fascinating experience.
• The Mill Hill Chill and Coffee, Cake & Crafting celebrated their 1st birthday’s this month with cake, beer, board games, crafting, badge making and décopatch.
• Mill Hill Litter Pickers along with the NW7hub and Lawrence Street Allotments help keep Mill Hill litter free and clean. We now stock kit at the NW7hub that you can borrow to litter pick at any time that suits you so grab some friends and get stuck in.
• New Classes including Hatha style Yoga every Tuesday from 6.30pm and Wednesdays from 12.30pm guaranteed to ease stiff joints and contribute to a general feeling of wellbeing. Taster sessions for 3- 8-year-olds for Mama Codes started on the 14th and  continue on 21st of May – a great playful way for kids to learn new computer skills.

Venue Hire & Bookings We still have the capacity to host many more special events and are always happy to hear from people who would like to hire any of our rooms for classes or private events. 

Partnerships with the NW7hub

At the NW7hub partnerships and collaboration with different organisations are key. Not only do they raise awareness on difficult issues, inspire inclusion and diversity, they are also heaps of fun!

We would like to recognise the commitment and tremendous efforts of our long term hirers who bring the community together at the Hub on a weekly basis.

Top Kangaroo, Ruth Silver, who leads Kangaroo Kids every Monday, hosted a very special bank holiday charity class for Spread a Smile in the Society Room. They raised over £200 which will provide much-needed entertainment and relief for poorly children in hospitals.  It was a lovely event with lots of animal puppets, singing, and dancing.

Superwoman Anita, who hosts the fantastically fun Caterpillar Kids Music every Tuesday is currently fundraising for Children’s Activities Week and Caudwell Charity who support children with autism and their families. Her challenge is ‘Watch me Fly’ which means she has to fit in as many songs about flying during her classes as possible – the skies the limit!

NW7hub Outreach

As ever, the vision for the NW7hub and MHPL new build is never too far from our minds and as we love getting out into the community we were delighted to join up with the Lawrence Street Allotments at their spring plant sale to raise awareness of our plans.

Many thanks to Kevin and the allotment team for making us feel so welcome and for all the delicious tea and cake in such beautiful surroundings.  We hope to see you back in August for the next plant sale.

Our Trustees, volunteers, and staff continue to work tirelessly to see the long term vision through to completion and currently our immediate target is £8,000 which will raise enough money to push through with consultation and planning.

Welcome to our March Newsletter.  It’s been another bumper month:  our calendar is filling up with new classes; our staff and volunteers are getting to grips with the new Library management system and we are planning our next big charity event, the NW7hub’s Spring Arts & Crafts Fair on 23rd & 24th March.

Headlines

• Local artists, designers, crafters, and makers are invited to showcase their handmade products at our Spring Arts & Crafts Fair over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of March. We have a number of fantastic workshops lined up for the Fair so scroll down and find out more about how you can get involved.
• The Young Barnet Foundation joined us for a morning of presentations and networking that brought different community leaders and their enterprises together. These diverse organisations work to support different groups of society, building resilience by providing safe and creative spaces so that our community can thrive, develop key skills, build meaningful relationships and nurture their ambitions away from difficult environments.
• The New Mural was unveiled on 7th of February.  Gifted by the talented Year 8-11 pupils of Copthall School it has provided the Society Room with an injection of colour, depicting the vibrant and diverse community of Mill Hill.  

New Classes & Party Bookings – Our calendar is steadily filling up with new bookings which is great news; not only does it inspire community cohesiveness it also demonstrates the entrepreneurial spirit of the local area. We still have the capacity to host many more special events and are always excited to hear from people who would like to hire any of our rooms for classes or private events. We can accommodate adult and children’s parties, classes, social clubs and much more Please do get in touch if you have any requirements.

New Mural in the Society Room

On 7th of February, the NW7hub welcomed Year 8-11 Art students from Copthall school, their teachers and friends for the unveiling of the fabulously bright and vibrant new mural. The students were presented with a Certification of Thanks by Cllr Lisa Rutter who gave us her take on the afternoon.

“I attended on behalf of the Mayor on 7th February to unveil this Mural made by Copthall students and also congratulated and presented some certificates to the students. The mural was commissioned by the NW7hub – a community centre and café in the Library Building and the brief was to reflect the local area and its community.
The project was started with 36 talented Copthall School Art students from Years 8-11 in July 2018 and was completed during a weekly lunchtime club up until Christmas 2018.
The mural is divided into 6 large panels and mixed year groups of six students painted each panel. The finished mural is a fantastic vibrant piece of work and a great showcase of Copthall’s student’s creativity which really does reflect the local community as well as the students involved. The staff at the NW7hub are delighted with their finished Artwork and say it has really lifted the feeling of the room”

What a year 2018 has been for the NW7hub. We not only celebrated a year of running the library in April but also we ran some great children’s shows – Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, The Elf and the Shoemaker, our first winter pantomime and the stand-up Comedy nights in the Summer.

All of this proves the Hub is a viable and vital community resource that can host a variety of events and arts.

This year we saw the building of the Studio space which was donated by Adam Morley and has created many opportunities for new hires and multiple uses of the Library space.

The Hub has delivered on its promise and continues to grow to serve the community.

For instance, over 150 local children took part in the summer reading challenge. We have run lots of fabulous classes for children: Dance, performing arts, soft play, music and movement, art classes, yoga and Zumbini.

We have run lots of fabulous classes for adults too: Meditation, Art, Pilates – keep your eyes open for more in the New Year.

We established some lovely monthly social events: Coffee Cake and Crafting, the ever popular Mill Hill Chill, and regular Art fairs.

Regular meetings for the Mill Hill Preservation Society, the Neighbourhood Forum and the Residents Association have been held at the Hub.

Two of our Volunteers have moved into paid employment as a direct result of working at the hub and we have a thriving over 50s group. Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do at the NW7hub. We wish to thank every one of them for their time, it is very much appreciated.

We can’t wait to see what 2019 brings for the NW7hub and our vision of establishing a new thriving community hub at the Daws Lane as the site comes a little closer to fruition with the local referendum due in 2019. We will continue to be at the heart of our community, accessible and open to all.
